Kumana Bird Sanctuary in Sri Lanka’s deep southeast is one of Asia’s premier wetland birding destinations – its mangrove-fringed lagoons host breeding colonies of painted storks, night herons and spoonbills that arrive in their thousands during nesting season. The park also carries regular leopard and elephant activity within a completely uncrowded setting. Best April-September.
